About the Artist...

Herb Edwards was born in Brownsville, PA in 1940. He received his BFA from The University of New Mexico in 1963 and his MFA from Pratt Institute in 1970. Herb was a professor of fine arts for over twenty years at Brookdale Community College in New Jersey. In 1990 he left teaching to devote full energies to his art and moved to a small artist's community in Northern New Mexico, painting the high desert landscape and exhibiting in Santa Fe.
Herb and his family now live on Cape Cod where he exhibits his paintings at

Chatham Fine Art in Chatham, MA and The Christina Gallery in Edgartown, MA.

                                                                                                                    Artist Statement...

As someone once said " I'm a artist always working to become an artist." Sometimes it's the art medium that inspires me and I've worked in many, including traditional oils I develop slowly, Sometimes I'll work au plein aire directly from nature, sometimes from my own photographs inspired by places on the Cape or New Mexico, North Carolina or the south of France. They become the landscapes, seascapes and wetlands, local harbors and inlets that I call Painterly Realism. Sometimes I stay within a theme like gardens or still-lifes, figures sailing or swimming or walking along the beach, some having fun, others quietly reflecting. And sometimes its pure abstraction done in my studio that always surprise me. When I think of artists that inspire, it's as diverse: Cezanne, Monet, Edward Munch, Fairfield Porter, Richard Diebenkorn. Diverse and yet for me what connects them is their commitment to honest discovery and personal vision, and what I strive for as well.
